How to Check Coolant Levels

Coolant Car Check

Whether you’re a first-time driver or a seasoned motorist, taking on car care in your own Bellaire garage can lead to a lot of questions. Things like, “What is coolant?” or “How to check coolant levels?” might come to mind. Coolant is a fluid that transfers heat to regulate the temperature of your engine. Whether you drive a brand-new car or an older used model, coolant is an essential fluid as it contains additives to ensure that it won’t freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and that it won’t overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit! Review our service tips below to learn how to check coolant levels, what to do when your coolant level is low, and more!

What to Look for When Checking Coolant Levels

Now that we’ve answered, “What is coolant?” it’s time to learn a bit more about how to actually go about checking your coolant levels. If you suspect your coolant level is low, you’ll want to pop the hood of your car and look for the reservoir. You won’t need to remove the radiator cap to check the coolant level. Rather, you can check the markings found on the side of the reservoir. If the liquid reaches the “full” indicator, you’re set to continue with your commutes from Kalkaska to Lake City.

If your coolant level is low, you’ll need to remove the radiator cap and add fresh fluid. Slowly add a 50/50 mix of coolant/water. Be sure to check your coolant to see if it’s premixed. At this time, you’ll also want to give the hoses connected to the reservoir a spot-check to be sure there aren’t any signs of leaks or damage.

Note: If you do need to add more fluid to your reservoir, be sure that the engine has cooled down. You’ll also want to avoid opening the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

When to See a Service Technician

So, when should you bring your vehicle to our Traverse City service center for care? If you suspect an issue with your coolant level sensor or you spot a leak, make the trip right away. When checking your coolant levels, you want to keep in mind that coolant is thinner than oil but thicker than water. So, if you notice an odd, sludgy appearance, schedule service with us right away. You won’t want to drive very far, as overheating is possible which can lead to severe engine damage.

When to Change Coolant

Your coolant will naturally deplete over time, so it’s a good idea to check your coolant levels every three to six months. Generally, the liquid is blue, green, yellow, or red. So, if you spot brownish or even clear fluid, flush the system and add fresh liquid.
